Hi, my name is John Garthwaite.

I started participating in Sport Nunchaku 9 months ago. I had never heard of it before and I was encouraged to have a trial lesson by Ju-Jitsu Instructor Sensei Richard Smith and enjoyed it very much. I train once a week at the Sands Centre in Carlisle.


For me it combines fitness and learning at the same time, I find it hard work but very rewarding with all the different moves and tactics involved. I recently competed in the Cumbria area championships, coming third, this was very much a surprise as I had never done anything like that before. In May 2012 I will be competing in the World Championships in Switzerland. With the help, guidance and encouragement of Sensei Smith I have pushed myself further than I ever thought I could.


I am a white belt and hoping to be a yellow belt at the next grading session.It had taken a while to get used to a contact sport such as this, but with time comes an attitude just to get stuck in and try your best, whatever you background or age.
